Gabrielino 39, Rosemead 37: On a day in which basketball games were postponed at a rate of speed so fast, you would have thought it was 2021 again, it only figured that the two best girls basketball teams in the Mission Valley League would be ensnared in a tight battle.
The Eagles (9-4, 2-0) came away with the win when Kyra Yoshitani rebounded an errant 3-point attempt from Yvonne Yu and scored a layup with 17 seconds left in the game. Yoshitani ended the game as the teams’ leading scorer with 12 points. Josie Sanchez added seven points and Rachel Liv pumped in six points.
Rosemead (11-7, 1-1) had their chances to come away with the victory. They started the third quarter on an 8-0 run that started on a layup by standout guard Vivian Duong and gave Rosemead a 24-19 lead. But the Eagles mounted a late rally in the final stages of the third quarter and tied the game at 27 at the end of the quarter.
Duong finished as the games’ leading scorer with 15 points and Jasmine Duong pitched in another 11 points. The win moves Gabrielino into sole possession of first place in the Mission Valley League standings.

In another Mission Valley League girls’ basketball game Monday night, South El Monte defeated Mountain View 44-12.
