Glendora 64, Diamond Bar 59: If Glendora makes another deep run in the CIF Southern Section playoffs in February and March, it might look back on these past two days at the Gary Prestesater Classic Tournament as the moment they turned the corner.
Trailing by as many as 11 points, the Tartans unleashed a powerful effort in the second half and defeated the Brahmas 64-59 in Saturday’s championship game. Noah Smith, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player had a huge game, scoring a team-high 28 points and dished 8 assists.
“I like our resiliency and our toughness, we battled (Saturday),” Glendora coach Gordon Hamlow said. “Diamond Bar is a very good team. They punched us in the mouth, and I thought our kids responded and played a good, tough second half.”
According to Luke Jacobson, a senior who scored 20 points and was named to the all-tournament team, the team had a meeting earlier this week to clear the air and get focused on the task the last two days.
“We talked about what we needed to get better and get ourselves fired up,” Jacobson said. “It all came together the last two days. These last few games felt like we were playing Glendora basketball.”
Diamond Bar (3-2) outstanding junior point guard Malcolm Bell delivered a big performance, scoring 28 points, and was named to the all-tournament team. Richi Calimag added 13 points.
“We played hard but in the second half, we lost our assignments,” Diamond Bar coach Henry Frierson said. “We had some breakdowns defensively in the second half and be tight on two of the big players. We knew that they could shoot the ball. You hate to lose these types of battles.”
Jacobson hit a 3-point basket with 3:14 left in the fourth quarter to give the Tartans the lead. Ethan Alfonso, connected on his first basket of the game, a 3-point basket, on the ensuing possession for Diamond Bar that tied the game at 57.
