St. Francis and Los Altos boys hoops post impressive wins at State Preview Classic, Glendora defeats Los Altos in key area girls matchup

BOYS BASKETBALL
#2 St. Francis 64, Long Beach Poly 60: In one of the more exciting games of the day as part of the State Preview Classic Presented by SB Live, the Golden Knights tagged another impressive win, this time against the Jackrabbits. Buckley DeJardin had a huge game with 28 points and Jake Goldberg pumped on 18 points. St. Francis (18-4) will get a few days off before returning to action with a home game against Alemany on Wednesday.


#3 Los Altos 61, Hillcrest 50: The Conquerors put together one of the more impressive performances at the State Preview Classic with a huge win over the Trojans. Jazz Gardner and CJ Bellamy scored 18 points apiece to pace the Conquerors' (15-4) offensive attack. Los Altos will have back-to-back Hacienda League games against Rowland on Monday and Wednesday.


#5 Walnut 87, South Hills 57: After getting off to a bit of a slow start, the Mustangs’ offense put it into overdrive in the second half and easily dispatched the Huskies in a Hacienda League affair. Malik Khouzam continues to catch the eye as he scored 32 points with Ryan Win adding 16 points. Walnut (16-6, 4-1) has a rematch with Los Altos next Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Shadow Hills 43, #1 Sonora 32: The Raiders fell behind 30-16 at halftime and couldn’t recover in suffering a loss at a Glendora High School showcase event.

#9 Glendora 59, #4 Los Altos 49: In the area game of the day, the Tartans jumped out to a 46-35 lead and never looked back in defeating the Conquerors at a showcase event they host. Hailey Schaffer looked terrific offensively as she scored a team-high 17 points. Kennedy Herrmann pitched in 16 points and Rylie Anderson tallied 10 points. Los Altos senior guard Vhenus Gaoa was the games’ leading scorer with 21 points.


Whittier 49, El Rancho 30: Patricia Gaitan and Brianna Charles each scored 8 points, but it was not enough as the Dons suffered a Del Rio League loss to the host Cardinals.
Keppel 70 Schurr 45: The Aztecs jumped out to a 30-15 halftime lead and cruised to an easy Almont League win over the Spartans. Jennifer Nitta paced the offensive attack with 18 points.
Azusa 35, Gladstone 29: Sophomore Melissa Jimenez had a nice performance as she scored a team-high 12 points in the Aztecs’ Montview League win over the Gladiators.

Bishop Amat 1, La Serna 0: Lenea Guerrero scored the only goal for the Lancers in a nonleague win over La Serna.

Mission League
Bishop Amat secured the Mission League Dual Meet championship with a win on the finals over Chaminade at Alemany High School. League individual finals will take place next week.
Bob Bellot Classic at Montclair High School
It was a big day for local wrestlers at the Montclair event as Walnut (218) narrowly took the team points championship over Northview. The Mustangs got the job done with four wrestlers taking top honors. In the 106-pound final, Ronnie Ramirez of Walnut pinned his teammate Camilo Ramirez with a pin in the second period. Christian Garcia kept the momentum going for the Mustangs going at 113 points with a narrow 5-4 win over Luis Solis over Carter HS.
Elijah Flores gave Walnut its third individual championship with a first-period pin of Moorpark’s Logan Andrews at 120 pounds. Fernando Barreto, one of the Mustangs' best hopes of winning a state title, won the 138-pound title when Andrew Cate-Cribari of Cimarron-Memorial declared an injury default.
Northview had two wrestlers win individual titles. Jacob Salcido continued to enhance his rapidly improving resume with a first-period pin of Mason Hernandez of Citrus Valley in the 152-pound final. Anthony Troncoso won the 285-pound title with a first-period pin over San Gorgonio’s Santiago Torres. South Hills (85) finished in ninth place in the team standings and Santa Fe (81.5) checked in tenth.

GIRLS WRESTLING
Ayala Invitational
Four area girls wrestlers won the gold medal at the Ayala Invitational at Ayala High School. In the team standings, Corona High School took top honors with San Dimas (134) placing fifth, Arroyo (124.5) was sixth and Walnut (123) checked in seventh.
Arroyo’s national championship sister duo of Brianna and Emilie Gonzalez was impressive all day. Brianna shut out Nevada state champion Sterling Dias of Slam Academy, 6-0, in the 101-pound final. Emilie defeated Ayala’s BK Martinez with a pin in the second period of the 106-pound final.
Walnut’s freshmen phenom Anaya Falcon secured the 111-pound title with a 6-1 win over Paloma Valley’s Karissa Turnwall. Mark Keppel’s Allie Phillips took the 235-pound championship with a first-period pin over Mayte Sanchez of Slam Academy.

Bishop Amat’s Kaitlyn Castro advanced to the 116-pound final but suffered a loss to Emma Albanese of Slam Academy by first-period fall. San Dimas’ Esperanza Dorantes was pinned in the first period of the 126-pound finals by national champion Katie Gomez of Birmingham HS.
Walnut’s Jordan Carrillo suffered a loss by second period pin to Vida Becker of Cypress HS. Jenae Acero suffered a tough 2-0 loss to Vista Murrieta’s Mariyah Casados in the 170-pound final and Charter Oak’s Christina Page was suffered a loss via a first-period pin to Hillcrest’s Gisselle Macias in the 189-pound championship match.
