AT THE PREP BASEBALL REPORT TOURNAMENT
South Hills 6, La Mirada 4: If there were two storylines from this year it was the pitching performance from South Hills’ Elias Reyes and La Mirada’s defensive woes. Reyes, a Loyola Marymount commit, threw five solid innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and struck out six to pick up the win. He threw 85 pitches, 52 of them strikes, and had his fastball clocked on our speed radar ranging from 85-87 with a top seed of 88 MPH. Noah Malone had a terrific game with a double in the 3rd inning that scored two runs and scored twice. Luke Bauer also contributed with a huge single in the fifth inning that scored two more runs. Kevin Jeon had two hits and Maverek Russell scored twice and drove in a run. Carson Flores, La Mirada’s starter, lasted only 2 2/3 innings, allowed three runs and striking out four.
Orange Lutheran 11, Maranatha 3: The Lancers broke open a 2-1 game in the third inning by scoring 6 runs in the third inning and cruised to an easy win over the Minuteman. Zach Strickland, a UCLA signee, brought home Maranatha’s first run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center field. Orange Lutheran’s Gabe Fraser, a University of Arkansas commit, and Ben Reilano, an Oklahoma State commit, each connected on doubles that drove in two runs. Maranatha’s Andrew Miller, a Cal State Fullerton commit, had a rough outing as he allowed seven runs on six hits. Gary Morse, one of the top junior pitchers in Southern California, was solid on the mound for the Lancers as he allowed one run on two hits and struck out four in five innings of work. His fastball was in the high 80s on our radar, topping at 90 MPH.
