A handful of area athletes performed well in preliminaries and will be participating in Saturday's final.

Several area athletes performed well on Friday night on the first night of the CIF State Track and Field Championships that are being held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
In one of the more impressive performances of the night, Glendora’s Maya Shinnick turned in the third-fastest time of three heats (55.33) and easily made the field for the girls 400-meter final. Her time was just shy of her lifetime best in the event of 55.23.

Marshall's Logan Davis, who has the fastest times in the 200 and 400 in the area, qualified for the state final in both of those events. In the 400, Davis finished in third place in the second heat with a final time of 47.56. In the 200, Davis just made the final as he stopped the timer in 21.45 seconds

La Canada’s Arielle McKenzie, who won a CIF Southern Section Div. 3 title in the girls 800 two weeks ago, looked good on Friday as she qualified for the 800 final with a final time of 2:11.69. Ventura freshmen phenom Sadie Englehardt was the fastest qualifier, posting a 2:10.13 in a winning the event.

The Monrovia 4x400 boys relay team qualified for the state final as they posted a final time of 3:19.84 in the second of three heats. They’ll be participating in the final event of the state meet on Saturday night.
One of the major disappointments came in the hurdle races where Monrovia's Madeleine Conte failed to qualify for Saturday night's final in the 100 (14.67) and 300 (44.34). She was considered one of the top contenders in both events to earn a possible medal. Arcadia’s Shriya Velichala also competed in the 300 and posted a final time of 44.83, which also failed to get her into the field for the state final.

In the field events, South Pasadena’s Nik Iwankiw qualified for the shot put and discus with impressive efforts in the preliminaries. The senior had the seventh-best throw in the discus with a throw of 179-10. Golden Valley’s Terraine Wiggins Jr, who won the event at last week's CIF Southern Section Masters Meet, had the top mark of 195-3.
The senior also qualified for the shot put with a throw of 59-1.50, which was the third best in the event. Great Oak’s Aiden Pastorian had the top throw of 61-01.50.
Los Altos' Katherine Porter, on her final attempt in the girls high jump, cleared 5-5 but just missed qualifying for Saturday night's final. Porter also starred on the school's girls volleyball team and will be playing collegiate volleyball at Cal State Northridge.
