SGV/Whittier Prep Sports Zone: Escarcega on Preps: We've had your back for the last year, now we are asking to have our back...
Recently, we marked the one-year anniversary of our newsletter. It’s been a wild year, to say the least.
The goal of the newsletter was to be a second voice to what is going on in high school preps in the San Gabriel Valley and the Whittier area. We’ve gone to all parts of Southern California to cover our best athletes.
Whether it was with La Salle girls' basketball last winter, being both the swimming and track and field finals, to the softball championships in Irvine, we were there.
Every day in the winter, spring, and fall we haven’t missed a day covering the day’s action. High School sports is a 6-day-a-week proposition, and it can make for some long days.
This was the first football season that area fans could get information directly from coaches throughout the area about their upcoming team. It worked so well that we did this same thing for girls and boys basketball.
During the football season, you got to see the human side of Friday Night Lights with our Monday Morning QB and we shed a light on the games that didn’t get as much attention as they should have. We also took to the task to figure out where your favorite football team might be in the playoffs.
In short, for the past year, we’ve had your back and it has been so much fun.
Now, it’s time to have ours.
We are hoping that this is the only fundraising drive that we have to put together to help keep our project going. There were two choices here – one was to put select articles behind a paywall and keep a steady stream of income going.
However, I would rather NOT go behind a paywall because everyone seems to be enjoying the content that we have put out there. So, I decided to go in the GoFundMe direction, and hopefully, it will work out.
All we are asking for is a donation to keep us going and further enhance our newsletter. If every one of the 1,000+ subscribers just gave $5, that would be more than enough to keep us going for the year. Obviously, we’d like to hit a home run on this so that we can pay photographers to shoot games for us, hire a second writer to help with the coverage of games, or I can purchase a camera so I can shoot some of the games that I am at.
Trust us when we tell you, the money that you invest in us will go back to covering high school sports in the area. Your words have made our first year doing this project a fulfilling one. Your words and comments have shown that there can be more than one voice in the area covering sports year-round.
Now we are just asking for a little something so that we can keep the ball rolling. So, for the next 5-6 days, instead of going to Starbucks and getting a latte, take that $5 and donate it to us so that we can keep giving you the best coverage out there. The bigger the donation, the more thankful we can be – and at the end of the day, the kids will thank you as well for the attention that they are getting.
So, let’s roll up our sleeves, get to work, and donate as much as we can this week.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart and, as I like to say, let’s get to the work.
