GIRLS WRESTLING
Northview 44, San Dimas 25: It was a tour de force effort as the Vikings secured a Valle Vista League title with an impressive performance at San Dimas High School. Five Northview wrestlers secured pins that proved to be the difference in the win. “(San Dimas) always brings it and we were ready for that,” Northview coach Roy Lazaro said. “We knew where they were tough at and we were able to overcome those matches. Some of my girls stepped up big.”
In the featured bout of the night, three-time state champion Johanna Forman pinned state placer Juliana Marquez in the first period of their 160-pound match. Forman is a transfer from Montclair HS. “I always tell myself never to underestimate my opponent because you never know – anything can happen,” Forman said. “I also tell myself that I own this mat, and this is my match.”
In the match of the night at 126 pounds, Alejandra Sanchez secured three late takedowns in the third period to narrowly defeat Lori Cooperider 10-7. “That is a first-year varsity wrestler that took advantage of her opportunity,” Lazaro said. “She can easily be a state placer this year.”
In the boys division, Northview shut out San Dimas 78-0.
