South Pasadena 6, Monrovia 4: In the Rio Hondo League, you never know what will happen on any given game day. Favorites find a way to lose, teams win in the most mystifying fashion. It’s what makes the league that much more compelling.
Wednesday, it was South Pasadena’s turn to add the volatility of the league championship race. Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning which proved to be the difference in a 6-4 win over the visiting Wildcats. The loss drops Monrovia (7-4-1, 2-2) into third place in the Rio Hondo League standings behind Temple City (8-2, 3-0) and La Canada (8-1, 2-1).
The record will show that it was Ovy Garcia that scored a wild pitch from Donovan Loremzini that gave the Tigers the lead in the sixth inning. South Pasadena tacked on an insurance run on Jack Riffle’s single to center that scored Luke Riffle.
It appeared as if the Tigers were well on their way to an easy win when Joe Kazarian belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Tyler Mitchell for a 5-3 South Pasadena lead.
