St. Francis upsets Sherman Oaks Notre Dame; In Softball, California defeats La Serna and Los Altos upsets South Hills.

BASEBALL
MISSION LEAGUE
St. Francis 1, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 0: In a game that the Golden Knights desperately needed to remain a viable contender for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Mission League, John Calmette was the hero of the day. He connected on an opposite-field fly ball to left field of an 88 MPH pitch from Nate Kugler that scored Jackson Pratt with the only run of the game. The game turned into a pitchers’ duel between Notre Dame’s Kugler and St. Francis’ Kalani Quiroz. Quiroz, a senior, tossed a seven-hitter and struck out four, despite throwing a fastball in the high 70s with an 80 TOP. Kugler, a Dartmouth commit, struck out 12 with a fastball ranging from 88-91 with a 93 TOP. Both teams will hook up on Wednesday at Glendale Sports Complex.
ALMONT LEAGUE
Montebello 5, Bell Gardens 3: Jeremy Vargas struck out eight in a complete-game effort.
DEL REY LEAGUE
Bishop Amat 12, Serra 6: Jacob Campos hit a three-run homer and Aaron Sandin struck out four in 3.1 innings of work to earn the win as the Lancers took the first of two games this week.
GATEWAY LEAGUE
La Mirada 15, Norwalk 0: Walker Calvo, an Army commit, surrendered one hit in three innings of work with Maverek Russell and Bear Calvo driving in two runs for the Matadores in a five-inning win.
HACIENDA LEAGUE
South Hills 9, Wilson 0: Noah Malone and Steven Jimenez hit home runs for the Huskies.
Los Altos 7, Diamond Bar 4: Isaac Galindo drove in three runs and Jordan Garcia allowed two runs on four hits in 4.2 innings pitched to earn the win.
OLYMPIC LEAGUE
Maranatha 9, Whittier Christian 1: UCLA commit Zach Strickland struck out nine in 5.2 innings of work in the Minuteman’s win over the host Heralds.
PACIFIC LEAGUE
Arcadia 9, Glendale 1: Damian Catano went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs as the Apaches easily defeated the Nitros.
PREP LEAGUE
Rio Hondo Prep 11, Pasadena Poly 2: The Kares scored four runs in the fourth inning and five in the five to easily dispatch the Panthers, Josh Talfinger had a triple and drove in two runs.
RIO HONDO LEAGUE
South Pasadena 1, La Canada 0: Nolan Adams tossed a three-hitter and struck out four as the Tigers extended the Spartans' scoreless streak to 14 innings.
SANTA FE LEAGUE
Bosco Tech 10, Verbum Dei 1: Jose Iniguez allowed one unearned run on two hits in a complete-game effort.
NONLEAGUE
St. Paul 7, St. Monica 1: Kalai Benavente struck out 10 and allowed five hits in a complete-game performance for the Swordsmen.

St. Paul 6, Mary Star of the Sea 3: It was another stellar effort for Hannah Moreno as she went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs. Kailee Majia connected on a two-run homer.
DEL RIO LEAGUE
California 4, La Serna 2: The Condors took game two of the three-game series from the Lancers on the strength of a two-run sixth inning. Ashley Hernandez, a Boise St. signee, went 3 for 4 and drove in a run. Alexis Salas allowed two unearned runs on one hit and struck out a season-high 10 hitters. Alexis Baruch drove in La Serna’s only run.
Santa Fe 5, El Rancho 3: The Chiefs jumped to a 4-2 lead in the second inning and narrowly held on for a road win. Dahlila Hall hit a two-run home run for the Chiefs. Ava Galvan held the Dons hitless in 3.1 innings of relief work and struck out four to pick up the win.
HACIENDA LEAGUE
Los Altos 4, South Hills 2: The Conquerors wrestled away the lead from the Huskies on the strength of a huge effort in the circle by Giselle Mejia, who allowed six hits and struck out three. Brianah Alejandre went 2 for 3. South Hills’ Kayla Sigala went 2 for 2.
OLYMPIC LEAGUE
Whittier Christian 2, Valley Christian 1: Aleena Garcia, a UCLA signee, connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the 5th to propel the Heralds to a narrow win.
PACIFIC LEAGUE
Arcadia 15, Pasadena 4: Peyton Fox was the offensive star of the day as she hit two home runs and drove in six runs.
RIO HONDO LEAGUE
Monrovia 8, South Pasadena 5: Monrovia’s Kate Nelson hit an inside-the-park home run Mikalah Ortega and Mischa Lue-Long collected three hits.
